I am Varinia, aged 25.  Trecherus Brutus called me his woman and treated me as his wife.  He dressed me in fine clothes and gave me jewels to wear.  But we were not married.  I am a former slave girl, so marriage would have been impossible between us.  But even if he had asked me, I would never have accepted him.

I treat all Romans with cold, quiet scorn.  They think of me as an ice maiden, but they sense that underneath I am as hot and as passionate as Vesuvius.  It drives them mad that they cannot get to my core.  But I would never let a Roman see the secrets of my soul.  Especially not Trecherus.  He was infatuated with me.  But I looked on him with contempt.  In all my life I have only loved one man.  And the Romans killed him.  Which is why I view all Romans with hate, contempt and loathing!
