I am Nymphette, aged 34, Chief Vestal Virgin in the temple of Vesta.  I became a vestal virgin at the age of 6, when I left my family to take up my duties.  It was a huge honour for them.  My term of service is for thirty years, so I still have two years of service left.  During this time I have to remain celibate.  The punishment for not being celibate is to be buried alive.

The virgins tend the sacred flame of Vesta in the temple, making sure it never goes out. Because of our incorruptible character, top Roman citizens, including the emperor, use our temple to lodge documents of importance, such as wills and treaties.  The virgins also have a place of honour at public events.  For instance I have been present in the emperor’s box during the games to entertain Cleopatra.

Vesta has also conferred a special honour upon me.  She uses my body to communicate with the world.  I go into a trance and she talks through me.  She always speaks the absolute truth. Indeed she is very precise in all she says, even pedantic.  Her latest message came when I was at prayer with Messalina.  Vesta used me to give warning to Lustrous that he would have “a date with death on the Ides of March.”
