CARDINAL MAZARIN
First Minister of France and Ambitious Politician

I am Cardinal Mazarin, aged 40, Chief Minister to Louis XV.  I obtained the role shortly before the king’s marriage to Marie Antoinette of Austria.  I succeeded to the position when the previous incumbent, Cardinal Richelieu, died in his sleep.  Richelieu was keen for the king to marry an English Princess, but when I became Chief Minister, I championed the Austrian match.  Cardinal Richelieu was an exemplary minister, and it is a hard act to follow.  Fortunately Louis XV gives me a free hand.  He is too busy bedding cheap, common whores like Anna de Breuil!  A vice, pox riddled harlot if ever there was one!

Managing France is a very difficult task.  Financing the court is hugely expensive.  Yet taxes are already high, and there is unrest among the common folk, with talk of revolution.  Fortunately the king’s marriage to Marie Antoinette brought in a very useful dowry.  This helped stave off bankruptcy for a while.  But the country’s books are now way out of balance again.  Unless the exchequer gets a huge cash injection, I foresee an uprising!
