THE QUEEN AND HER LADY IN WAITING

Marie Antoinette has been married to Louis XV for almost two years.  Of Austrian descent, she is a pretty young woman of 23.  No intellectual heavyweight, the queen enjoys extravagant balls, masquerades, clothes and dancing.  The cost of these is substantial and there has been rumblings of discontent from the common people whose taxes pay for these excesses.  The French also have no love for their natural enemies, the Austrians.  Several public verbal assaults had left Marie Antoinette scared of being in Paris, and it was she who accepted Cyrano de Bergerac's invitation to stay at Château Meutre.

She was accompanied by her chief lady in waiting, Madame de Spicable, a young but ambitious lady of 25.  Although compliant to those above her, Madame de Spicable was known to be a sharp tongued lady with an eye for the main chance.  She had recently ensnared in marriage the Governor of the Bare Rock Bastille, Amorous de Spicable.
