The host of the party will be playing the role of Chief Investigator. They will be directing the investigation and ensuring things run smoothly. Their booklet will give full and clear instructions on how to do this.

The Chief Investigator, like all the other players, may also have questions and answers to give, scripts to act out and actions to perform.  But at the end of each round the Chief Investigator will also be giving a summary of what has so far been learnt. And, at the end of the game, it is the Chief Investigator who gives the dramatic denouement speech revealing which of the suspects is guilty of the crime.

Where possible, all Chief Investigator roles have been carefully written to be non-sex specific.

In "Slaughter at the Circus", Sam Slaughter, owner of the circus, acts as Chief Investigator into the gruesome murder of Jacques, knife throwing assistant, who has been found pinned to the wheel of death.  The various elements covered by Sam's booklet are:
