ALCOHOL & DRINKS

Alcohol can certainly help a murder mystery party go with a swing.  Before some people can be happy acting a part, they need to lose their inhibitions.  And although props and costumes can help with this, I have often found that a couple of glasses of wine are particularly effective.

Obviously if your guests are going to be driving, they shouldn't drink.  But otherwise I would encourage them to have a glass or two, to help them get into the part.

However some guests may be tempted to take too much - I once hosted a murder mystery at an event where there was a free bar.  We never actually made it to round 3! - So as host keep a wary eye on your guests and, if someone seems to be imbibing too freely, have a quiet word.  It will save an awful lot of hassle later.

Make sure you also have plenty of soft drinks on offer.  What with asking questions, acting out scripts and even indulging in the odd bout of acted screaming or hysterics, murder mysteries can be harsh on the vocal chords.  Make sure you have plenty of soft drinks to keep them whetted!

And remember that drinks can contribute to the party's atmosphere.  Mulled wine for Christmas murders.  Ale and mead for historical romps.  Elegant cocktails for a roaring twenties murder.  All these can help your guests get into their part!
